Boy, has a pet dog called “wolf”
Wolf goes running off a lot and boy always shouts “wolf” to get dog to come back
Wolf only answers to boy
One day the village is hit by a terrible plague
Villagers begin exterminating rodents and blame the dogs and cats
They find all the dogs and cats and a man in the village with a gun shoots each one and they all get buried in a big pit.
One of the dogs is missing.
Villagers realise missing dog is Wolf, who belongs to boy.
They bring boy and ask him where is wolf.
Boys tells them he does not know.
“I don’t know where he is,” says boy, “he ran away”
Villagers talk and remember that dog used to run away but as soon as boy shouted “Wolf!” it would come running back.
They said to the boy “boy, you must call to your dog, make him come back so that we can ensure the safety of the villagers”
But boy thought, these villagers are safe. Wolf being in the woods harms no one. As long as wolf stays away for long enough for the government to develop a vaccine, we’ll be okay, he can survive from catching mice and spiders.
“No!” said boy, “I will not shout for wolf. You would kill him, and he is my best friend.”
Villagers had forgotten plague which has stricken the village and all they want was to catch dog. They lifted boy and tied his feet to the rafters, dangling him upside-down.
“Now will you call him?” They sneered.
“NO!” shouted boy, “I protect my friend!”
Villagers laughed, “we’ll see”, someone tied boys hands together.
“Someone will pay for this” muttered, and left boy in cold barn for night.
When returned next day were shocked.
Expected find boy, but all left of boy was piece of paper.
Stepped forward. Old brute didn’t notice thin twine. Caught in boot.
Old brute reading the note. Didn't notice bear trap falling towards head...
"me & wolf are be fine," said note, "but you will not".
Old brute died instantly.
